Depart from your location, drive via Canal (short stop) to Peloponnese. Continue to Corinth. Visit Ancient Corinth & Acrocorinth castle. Visit Modern Corinth and Famous Statues of Alexander’s and Diogenes and learn their legendary dialogue. Continue to Diolkos.
The Diolkos was an ingenious, 6–8 km paved trackway built around 600 BC near Ancient Corinth, designed to drag ships across the Isthmus of Corinth. It served as a vital, high-speed shortcut between the Ionian and Aegean Seas, allowing vessels to avoid the dangerous 700-km journey around the Peloponnese peninsula.
1) Corinth Canal, famous for being one of the narrowest navigable canals in the world, with dramatic, near-vertical rock walls Links the Gulf of Corinth (Ionian Sea) with the Saronic Gulf (Aegean Sea). Length & Width: Approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) long and only about 25 meters wide, making it impassable for most modern large ships. A millennia-old dream, first conceived in ancient Greece (7th century BC) and attempted by Roman Emperor Nero, but only completed in 1893.
Wealth & Power: One of the largest, most affluent cities of ancient Greece, often competing with Athens and Sparta.
History & Destruction: Originally Greek, destroyed by Rome in 146 BC, then rebuilt as a Roman colony by Julius Caesar in 44 BC.
Strategic Importance: Controlled the Isthmus of Corinth, serving as a primary defense for the Peloponnese peninsula.
According to legend, Alexander the Great visited the philosopher Diogenes in Corinth, asking what he could do for him. Diogenes famously replied, “Stand out of my light”. Impressed by his audacity and contentment, Alexander declared, “If I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes”.
In ancient times, Kenchreai was one of the two ports of the inland city-state of Corinth. While Kenchreai served the eastern trade routes via the Saronic Gulf, Lechaion on the Corinthian Gulf served the trade routes leading west to Italy and the rest of Europe. Situated on the eastern side of the Isthmus of Corinth, Kenchreai sat at a natural crossroads for ships arriving from the east and overland traffic heading north and south between central Greece and the Peloponnese Christianity also arrived at Kenchreai early in the religion’s history. According to Acts 18:18, the Apostle Paul stopped at Kenchreai during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfill a vow, probably a Nazirite vow. Paul mentions the place and a woman named Phoebe in the local assembly in his epistle to the Romans
