The marvelous man-made Corinth canal connecting the Aegean and Ionian seas, as well as the Peloponnese peninsula with the central part of Greece. More than 2500 workers digging 6.400m for twelve years (from 1881 to 1893) Stop for photography, walk across on a pedestrian bridge and admire the canal from 80 m high
Ancient Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. The Romans demolished Corinth in 146 BC, built a new city in its place in 44 BC, and later made it the provincial capital of Greece.
The Acropolis of Mycenae, with its strategic position for the control of the Argolid Plain, is the kingdom of the mythical Agamemnon and the most important and richest palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history, its rulers and their family members (such as Klytaimnestra, Ifigeneia, Elektra, Orestes) have inspired poets, writers and artists over many centuries, from the ancient to the contemporary times.
Nafplio is a historical coastal town in the Peloponnese. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplion is the most picturesque town in mainland of Greece and we will stay here for overnight.
2nd Day. Depart after breakfast.
Nafplion Archaeological Museum is accommodated in the imposing in size as well as strict in symmetry, stone-built Venetian structure which covers and encases the central, Syntagma Square on its west side. It was first built in 1713, during the second reign of the Venetians, under the Naval Proveditore Augustine Sagredo. It is widely acknowledged as one of the best well-preserved Venetian structures in the whole of Greece.
Sparta Archaeological Museum comprises the oldest provincial archaeological museum of the country. Its neoclassical building was constructed between 1874 and 1876 in the center of the city and it has been declared a listed building for its architectural and historical interest. Ticket general 10€
Acropolis of Ancient Sparta is a historical archaeological site located on the tallest hill just north of the modern city center of Sparti, Greece. Unlike the grand, marble-heavy Acropolis of Athens, Sparta’s acropolis reflects the ancient city’s focus on military discipline over monumental architectural displays. Today, it functions as a peaceful, uncrowded park set amidst a tranquil olive grove. Continue to Olympia for overnight.
3rd Day. Depart after breakfast.
Ancient Olympia is one of the most influential ancient Greek sanctuaries. In antiquity it was famous beyond the borders of mainland Greece for hosting the Olympic Games every four years, starting in 776 BCE.
The archaeological site is located withing walking distance of the modern village called Ancient Olympia and it includes ruins from Bronze Age to the Byzantine eras. The site covers an expanded area of ruins scattered among low trees, as well as Zeus & Hera Temples, Fidias Workshop, Roman emperor Nero villa, the ancient stadium where the Olympics games took place and a lot more. An impressive array of artifacts which were unearthed during excavations are on exhibition at the nearby Olympia Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is one of Greece’s premier cultural institutions, housing the ancient treasures excavated from the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia.
The Rio–Antirrio Bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, is one of the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and longest of the fully suspended type. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese peninsula to Antirrio on mainland Greece by road.
Nafpaktos, known as Lepanto during part of its history, is a coastal town situated on a bay on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth.
Drive via Mount Parnassus in central Greece that towers above Delphi, north of the Gulf of Corinth, and offers scenic views of the surrounding olive groves and countryside. According to Greek mythology, this mountain was sacred to Dionysus and the Dionysian mysteries. It was also sacred to Apollo and the Corycian nymphs, and it was the home of the Muses. Overnight on the slopes of this amazing mountain, in a traditional village
4th Day. Depart after breakfast.
Delphi: Archaeological site & Museum. Visit at you leisure the sites of Apollo and Athena sanctuaries and Museum.
The Pythia: The title held by the high priestess who acted as Apollo’s mouthpiece. She delivered cryptic, poetic prophecies (oracles) while seated on a bronze tripod in the temple’s inner sanctum.
Athena’s Tholos: Situated in the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (“Athena before the Temple”), located about half a mile southeast of the main Temple of Apollo. Today, three of its original columns have been re-erected, making it one of the most photographed ruins in Greece.
Arachova is a mountainous village nestling picturesquely at the foot of Mt. Parnassós in Viotia. It is the most cosmopolitan winter destination in Greece, a great favorite for passionate ski lovers and celebrities, or just first-time visitors who wish to relax in a dreamy mountainous setting with modern tourism facilities. Its modern ski resort, its close proximity to Athens, and its breathtaking mountainous landscape are the strongest reason why.
Livadia Springs: Levadia Springs: Proceed to Levadia, a busy town and an important junction in the road network. Also an industrial center where its textile mills treat the cotton grown in the Copais valley. Short stop to visit the springs of Remembrance & Oblivion.
The Archaeological Museum of Thebes is one of the most important museums of Greece since some of its collections are rare or unique. The exhibits originate from excavations all around Boeotia and cover a long chronological period spanning from the Paleolithic to the Post Byzantine periods.
