Nafplion (or Nauplia) is a historic Greek costal city whose name originates from the mythical founder Nafplios , meaning “ship” Νάυς and “sailing/floating” (pleo).
Nafplion is a stunning, romantic seaside town situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of human-made moles. The city was originally almost isolated by marshes; landfill projects, primarily since the 1970s, have nearly doubled its land area. Nafplio was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from 1827 until 1834. It features a charming Old Town with narrow Venetian-style streets, bougainvillea-covered mansions, and vibrant cafes. Overlooked by the impressive Palamidi Fortress, it blends rich history with coastal beauty.
Nafplio History
Founded in mythology by Poseidon’s son, it has been a strategic port since the Bronze Age, later heavily influenced by Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman rule.
Historical Periods:
- Mythology & Antiquity: Named after Nafplios, son of Poseidon, the city was a Mycenaean-era settlement. Palamedes was a prince, son of King Nafplios in Greek mythology. He joined the rest of the Greeks in the expedition against Troy. He was associated with the invention of dice, numbers, and letters.
- Byzantine & Middle Ages: Re-emerged as an important Byzantine port by the 6th century AD.
- Frankish & Venetian Rule: Held by the Franks for 200 years before being sold to Venice. The Venetians (known then as Napoli di Romania) built the Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi, shaping the city’s, now, “Italian-looking” character.
- Ottoman Rule: The city surrendered to the Ottomans in 1540, later recaptured briefly by Venetians before falling back to the Ottomans.
- First Capital of Greece: Following the 1821 revolution, Nafplio was the capital from 1823 to 1834. Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state, was assassinated there in 1831.
- Modern Era: King Otto arrived in 1833, but moved the capital to Athens shortly after. It remains a major historical and cultural site.
Nafplio Old Town and Port
Nafplio Old Town, is a charming, pedestrian-friendly historic district in the Peloponnese, renowned for its Venetian, Ottoman, and neoclassical architecture. Located under the Palamidi Fortress, it features narrow, bougainvillea-lined streets, pastel-colored mansions, and the vibrant Syntagma Square, filled with cafes, boutiques, and tavernas. Syntagma Square: The heart of the city, surrounded by historic buildings like the Archaeological Museum (a former Venetian arsenal) and the Old Parliament. Architecture: A maze of narrow alleyways filled with colorful, well-preserved houses with balconies and colorful doors.
Nafplio port is a key, picturesque maritime hub in the Argolic Gulf of the Peloponnese, acting as a popular, often tender-based, cruise destination . It serves as a gateway to historic sites like Mycenae and Epidaurus. The area features 210 marina berths, a bustling promenade with Bourtzi fortress views, and close proximity to the Old Town.
What to See and Visit
Must-See Classical, Modern & Historical Sites, Museums: Nafplio is home to three distinct fortresses that offer deep dives into its Classical, Venetian and Ottoman history
- Palamidi Fortress: A massive hilltop stronghold built by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714. You can reach it via a strenuous climb of 999 steps or a short 15-minute drive for panoramic views of the Argolic Gulf.
- Bourtzi Castle: An iconic Venetian fortress located on the tiny islet of Agioi Theodoroi. It is accessible by a €5 boat ride from the harbor, and entry to explore the castle battlements is typically another €5
- Fortress of Acronafplia: The oldest of the town’s castles, which has foundations dating to ancient times and later additions by Byzantine and Frankish rulers. It is free to enter and offers some of the best sunset views over the rooftops.
- Archaeological Museum: Housed in a 1713 Venetian barrack in Syntagma Square, it features rare artifacts like the Bronze Age Mycenaean armor from Dendra.
- Folklore Museum: An award-winning museum showcasing traditional Greek costumes, textiles, and household items from the 18th to the early 20th century.
- Syndagma Square: The heart of the Old Town, where you can admire the Vouleftiko (the first Greek Parliament building) and the Trianon (the oldest surviving mosque in town) while enjoying a coffee
- Arvanitia Beach: A small, pebbled cove just a 15-minute walk from the Old Town, nestled at the base of the cliffs below Palamidi.
- Arvanitia Promenade: A scenic 1km seaside path that winds around the base of Akronafplia, connecting the port to Arvanitia Beach.
- Karathona Beach: A large, sandy Blue Flag beach located 3km south of town, famous for its shallow, calm waters that are ideal for families.
Eating & Drinking
Nafplio offers a rich Peloponnesian culinary experience focused on fresh, local ingredients like citrus, artichokes, and handmade pasta. Must-try dishes include moussaka, fresh sea food, drunken chicken and trachanas soup, best enjoyed at traditional tavernas in the Old Town.

You could visit Nafplion all year around. The best time is during the shoulder seasons of March April–May or September–October, offering pleasant hiking weather and fewer crowds. Fall (October) offers stunning colours, while late Jan – Feb – March is quieter and cooler. Unique time is Christmas, New Year 🎅and Easter. Avoid: Mid-July to August (heat/crowded) .
