Exploring Ancient Olympia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the western Peloponnese, is a journey to the birthplace of the Olympic Games which began in 776 BCE to honour the father of Gods and continued for over 1000 years. This sacred sanctuary was dedicated to Zeus, offers a mix of athletic history and ancient Greek religious ruins. Visitors can explore the ancient stadium, Temple of Zeus, Gymnasium, Fidias Workshop. The History of the Ancient Games The Games began as a single-day event but expanded into a five-day festival held every four years (an Olympiad).The Sanctuary a of Zeus (Altis): The sacred precinct containing the Temple of Zeus, which once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—the colossal chryselephantine (gold and ivory) Statue of Zeus by Phidias, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Temple of Hera (c. 590 BC) is a sacred Archaic Doric temple in Olympia where the Olympic flame is lit. Nearby, the Philippeion (c. 338 BC) is a unique circular Ionic monument dedicated to Philip II of Macedon’s family. Both are located in the Altis, highlighting early religion and later political power.
Temple of Hera (Heraion): One of the oldest temples in Greece, originally featuring wooden columns later replaced by stone. It is the site of the Olympic flame lighting ceremony today.
Architectural Evolution: Originally constructed with wood and mud brick, its wooden columns were gradually replaced with stone over centuries, showcasing different stages of the Doric style.
Modern Legacy: The Olympic Flame is lit at its altar before every modern Olympiad
Philippeion: A circular building (tholos) near the Heraion, featuring chryselephantine (ivory/gold) statues of the Macedonian royal family, serving as a memorial to Philippe II and his family.
The Workshop of Phidias in Ancient Olympia is the 5th-century BC studio where the renowned sculptor created the chryselephantine Statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Significance: It serves as vital archaeological evidence confirming the location and methods used to build the massive, 12-meter-high statue.
The Archaeological Museum of Olympia in Greece is a world-renowned institution near the ancient Olympic site, showcasing artifacts from the Sanctuary of Zeus. It is famous for housing the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Temple of Zeus sculptures. Key highlights include ancient bronzes, terracotta, and early Olympic history.

You could visit ancient Olympia in Peloponnese all year around. The best time is during the shoulder seasons of March April–May or September–October, offering pleasant hiking weather and fewer crowds. Early morning (before 9:00 AM) or late afternoon is ideal to avoid busy tour buses. Fall (October) offers stunning colours, while late Jan – Feb – April is quieter and cooler. Unique time is Christmas and Easter. Avoid: Mid-July to August (extreme heat/crowds)
